Worldwide Marriage Encounter
Military Outreach Program
With the approval and encouragement of Archbishop O’Brien,
the Worldwide Marriage Encounter movement (WWME) has initiated an
outreach program to all military installations throughout the world.
The project was proposed by Dave & Lucy Snyder and Father
Dennis Hughes, the leaders of the WWME movement in the southeastern
States of the United States. They wrote to Archbishop O’Brien
and proposed this initiative. He gave it his enthusiastic approval
and asked Bishop John Kaising to work with the Snyders.
Bishop Kaising has been very involved with WWME since 1978 when
he made his Marriage Encounter weekend in Birmingham, Alabama while
stationed at Ft. McCellan. Dave & Lucy were there with him and
were instrumental in asking the Bishop to go on a weekend. Dave
& Lucy are a retired military family and know the value of the
weekend for military couples.
The National Secretariat of the WWME movement here in the United
States is backing this initiative. Gary & Marcia Daigle and
Father Tom Frank, who are working with the Marriage Encounter communities
throughout the country, are spearheading this project on a national
basis. Each priest in the military was recently sent a packet announcing
this project. In that packet was a letter from Bishop Kaising and
the Snyders explaining the idea. The Encounter folks hope this really
takes off in our military communities.
