Massachusetts Camp Holy Cross Campout
August, 2004
Seven Marriage encounter families enjoyed the beautiful scenery,
entertaining activities, and roaring bonfire this August at the
diocesan-owned Camp
Holy Cross. Every year, we receive a warm welcome at Mass from
Fr. Chris Malatesta, the campground director and
pastor of St. Agnes Parish. Each year we are surprised by the latest
additions to this lovely place. This year, foosball, ping pong,
and pool tables were added in the Gym, and kayaks and paddles were
available at the lake, along with the usual canoes, fishing, and
paddle boats. Unusually cool weather for August kept all but the
hardiest swimmers out of the water, but the beach was full of activity
when all the children went to sail the boats they’d crafted
under the guidance of Tim & Linda Laporte.
Their creativity saved the day!

The family event this year was a Trust Walk Obstacle Course with
one blindfolded participant being told where to go by their teammate(s).
The winners, brother and sister team Michael and Kara Danielczuk,
used “follow my voice” to complete the course in 3:31
with Kara blindfolded and flat-out running in the direction of her
brother’s voice to touch the cones. Second place finishers,
Jessica Ginepro, Lizzie Laskey,
and Maria Savoie, completed the course in 4:05.
All participants carried away a prize treat and the lesson, “Trust
in God to Guide You.”

In the afternoon, campers worked up an appetite in a “Geezers
vs. Whippersnappers” soccer game. Despite the Whippersnappers
trying to distract the Geezers with chocolate chip cookies on the
field, defense was strong on both sides. The game was tied at 1-1
with time running out and a Whippersnapper going down, just as the
Geezers scored one last goal.

Competition was fiercely fun in the adult’s Pie Eating Contest.
Spouse against spouse, friend against friend. In the end, the 2003
champion, Dan Robillard, triumphed again, swallowing
his final bite in 56 seconds, 4 seconds faster than 2002 champ,
Ray Ginepro. Eric Guinen came
in 3rd with a time of 65 seconds.
