WWME World News Tidbits
Bob & Joy Hernandez and Fr. Chuck Kosanke
Here are a few tidbits heard at the World Council Meeting held
in Nairobi, Kenya January 10-16, 2005.:
WWME
Singapore celebrated their 25th anniversary in August 2004.
WWME Peru celebrated their 25th anniversary in October 2004.
WWME
Puerto Rico celebrated their 30th anniversary in December 2004.
WWME Germany
celebrated their 25th anniversary in 2004.
WWME Mauritius celebrated their 20th anniversary in July 2004.
WWME
Guyana celebrated their 25th anniversary in November 2004.
Croatian and Hungarian outreach to Vojvodina, Serbia, Montenegro,
and Romania continues, with considerable financial support by several
European
communities. There is a request from Czechia to bring WWME there.
To be able to restart communicating with Zimbabwe has been a source
of joy, despite difficulties arising from bad economical and political
situation, WWME is still very alive in this country.
Due to financial burden and the difficulty of having a priest
for the whole Weekend, Congo Democratic Republic has chosen, at
times, to squeeze Weekends into one day or split it into two consecutive
Sundays.
In Kenya, a “live out” Weekend was held to cater for
poor slum dwellers and the Love Languages program was held in Machakoo.
In Tanzania, the original as well as the Deeper outline has been
translated in Khiswahili and are both ready for use.
Cameroon needs more priests. Congo and South Africa badly needs
more Presenting Teams.
South Africa is struggling to meet its goal towards Botswana and
major problems are husbands working away during weeks and only comes
home at the end of the month, and then there is AIDS affecting the
population. The big sorrow for South Africa is their difficulty
in getting things moving in Swaziland.
In Fiji, stability is now a reality after some years of political
tension and upheaval, allowing a significant WWME reach out within
Suva.
In New
Zealand, WWME is working with pre-marriage education, assisting
the leadership where they can. Strong Weekend numbers and two successful
community Reunions is an encouraging outcome.
WWME survives and thrives in Oceania without telephone, Fax, and
email but when wider communication is required, people do not have
the normal skills and facilities. Presenting Teams in northern Fiji
and Malaita are all subsistent farmers and so plan their lives to
give the time to WWME. In Oceania, the employed are excluded from
becoming a Presenting Team because to give a Weekend demands
approximately six days in travel. Also, Team training is
done as “live-in” blocks of up to 3-6 weeks.
