Thoughts Before the Convention
Fr. Bob McDonald
I am leaving tomorrow, for retreat, then on to the Worldwide Marriage
Encounter Convention
near Baltimore. The theme for the Convention is “In God We
Trust”.
I am curious about the theme. It is the motto we see engraved on
U.S. coins.
The motto stirs a lot of anger in me. For I think we do not really
trust in God. We as a nation seem to trust more in our military
might, our nuclear power (weapons of mass destruction), and star
wars to solve our international problems. When faced with unwanted
pregnancy, we trust in surgical answers, rather than in the providence
of God. Often, there seems to be more trust in drugs than in the
healing power of God.
I am wondering how this message, “In God We Trust”,
will be presented. What does it have to do with our relationships?
Of course, trust is the basis of all relationships.
We dream of unity in our marriage, in our covenant relationships.
But how can we become one if you cannot trust me, and I cannot
trust you?
This trust is all the more important in our relationship with God.
Unless we trust in God, we can never find what our heart desires.
On our Weekend, Risking To Trust in Dialogue, the Saturday
evening talk, helped us to see how important it is to trust. We
began to grow in our love for each other by taking risks, and building
more trust in our Dialogue.
Perhaps I will get a chance to reflect on this motto after the
Convention. But I will be on the road, visiting family so may not
get my thoughts back to you right away.
I love you all. –
