The Big Decision

Fr. Bob McDonald

It was May, 1978 when I began this journey with passionate lovers. After my Weekend, I began preparations to present Weekends. Without exception, I have been lifted up to new heights by the experience of seeing Christ renew his Bride, the Church. I have en-joyed being a part of a worldwide mission. Our vision of unity, of couples giving new life to the Church by their unity, has driven me to write and rewrite and live my talks.

The big blow came yesterday when I was not capable of celebrating the Sunday Mass. I had made the decision to present a portion of the Cursillo Saturday, trying out my new companion, the oxygen tank. It was too much. Fr. Andy saw my weakness. Fr. Joe gladly covered for me.

Today I learned the verdict: 24/7! I will need to have a supply of oxygen near me day and night, wherever I go. The breathing specialist was gentle, but his words were like a clap of thunder when lightning strikes close by. What now? How will that affect my commitment to Worldwide Marriage Encounter? What about the upcoming Weekend in Lewiston, Maine, November 4-6?

So, now my dearly beloved, I need your prayers and understanding and loving input.

In the days ahead I will be struggling with “To Love is a Decision.” I cannot let you down. Yet the “Energizer Bunny” needs more batteries. I will count on you to help me do what is truly loving. To Love may mean the decision to enter more closely into your own lives of suffering and loss. I can see many loveletters filled with feelings that Jesus himself had toward the end of His mission. One thing that is certain: I will continue to love you in His name.
