A Little Giant Is Called To Heaven
Remembering Fr. Rumie González
(1943-2004)
Priest of the Piarist Fathers: Escuelas Pías
He was born in the city of Glendale, CA. August 25, 1943, in a
family of Mexican origin with deep Christian roots. He went to school
in the Parish School of Sacred Heart in Lincoln Heights, and later
to the Bishop Mora Salesian High School.
When he was 19 years old he entered the Piarist Fathers and received
the Piaris habit on the feast day of St. Joseph of Calasanz in 1963.
He completed the theological studies in Spain. All of his companions
from the juniorate remember him for his joyful and happy spirit
all the time.
He re-confirmed his baptismal consecration through his profession
of Solemn Vows on July 19, 1969.
Two years later, on May 23, 1971, Fr. Rumie was Ordained a priest
in our parish of Our Lady Help of Christians, Lincoln Heights, by
Auxiliary Bishop Juan Arzube. This was the first Ordination celebrated
in Spanish in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
Dedicated to religious education, the charism of the Piarist Order,
he stood out through his extraordinary creativity in catechesis,
which he loved doing with children and youth.
He was a person of great gentleness, a good friend to the Order,
with a great capacity for empathy in his pastoral labors and with
an admirable gift of counsel.
During his last years, and despite his delicate health, he tirelessly
worked by promoting the Youth Movement “Search” and
in the marriage apostolate, of Worldwide Marriage Encounter as regional
Counselor.
His apostolic work has been frequently recognized and appreciated
by all who had the privilege of being close to him, whether young
and old.
On his journey to Calvary and in his identification with the suffering
Christ, he experienced a beautiful moment on the Sunday that he
solemnly received the Sacrament of the Sick. That day, in the Parish
of Our Lady Help of Christians, filled to capacity with young people
and families, marked the ideal moment when he received the homage
and gratitude that all desired to give him. On that day and throughout
his long illness, he gave a wonderful testimony of his conscious
and joyful acceptance of God’s will for him, an acceptance
that was visible until the last moment of his life, the moment of
his final Easter.
May he rest in Peace.
