A Prayer Letter Primer

Dear M.E. Community,

We are Bill & Sheila Goodman and we’re very excited that Ed & Leo asked us to be Prayer Letter Coordinators for Western New York Marriage Encounter. We were disappointed when our first Weekend as Coordinators was cancelled, but then we were overwhelmed with twenty-three couples for June! Praise God! There were late add-ons, one or two cancellations and swaps to later Weekends, but with the help of many of you in our community we were able to assign a Prayer Couple to everyone, including Prayer Couples from downstate and the Buffalo Frontier. God bless you all! We have always admired the past Prayer Letter Coordinators and how hard they worked to make sure every couple had a Prayer Couple.

We remember the joy we felt on Sunday when we learned that Denis & Charlene Lepel had been praying for us all weekend as we wrote, prayed, cried, laughed and rediscovered our love and recommitted ourselves to God and our relationship. They didn’t know us, but they knew what we were about to experience, as they had already been encountered. We still feel a special bond with them.

Although we felt challenged finding couples to pray, we persevered. We know that all of you take praying for a couple on a Weekend very seriously and it is a big commitment. Taking time out of our busy lives to pray for the Weekend as a whole and for a couple that we don’t know, sacrificing for them, talking to them after the Weekend about community, going to the reunion. When Sheila and I asked ourselves, “Is this too much to ask of our Encountered Couples?” Our answer came loud and clear, “No.” We realized the need to ask you to commit yourselves more fully to being a Prayer Couple.

Our living connection to the Weekend is through Community and the new couples being encountered need to be connected. Here’s where you come in. Commit to the reunion, talk to your couple about a core, about your core. After our Weekend, when Denis and Charlene invited us to our first core meeting, we danced on the chairs at the restaurant!

We have used the WWME online resource for Prayer Couples and updated it for WNY-WWME. Included are the M.E. mission statement, a mission statement for Prayer Couples, responsibilities before, during and after the Weekend, directions for writing a prayer letter and other information the prayer letter should contain. The Western New York Prayer Couples Bible follows in this couple power. We invite you to print it and use it as a guide.

Sheila and I would love to come to your CORE meeting and present our vision for Prayer Couples in our Area. We will bring a presentation and dialogue question for a 10 and 10, if you like. We’re looking forward to talking with you and seeing you at your CORE meetings!!

Love,
Bill & Sheila
