History and Philosophy of Worldwide Marriage
Encounter
Compiled by Jack & Karen Baker
The history of Worldwide Marriage Encounter amazes us. How could
a 1952 theory of Fr. Gabriel Calvo, a priest in Spain, grow into
a world wide organization of financially unpaid couples and priests?
Our history is complete with unsung heroes and phenomenally blessed
leaders. But, like so many other stories passed from one generation
to the next, our history has some inconsistencies. We believed through
the years of our involvement that Fr. Chuck Gallagher attended the
first weekend in Notre Dame following 1967 Christian Family Movement
Convention. We also had heard that the first “reach out”
outside of the New York / New Jersey area had been to Grand Forks,
North Dakota. Actually, Fr. Gallagher attended either the third
or fourth weekend presented by Jamie & Arleen Whelan and Father
Frank Heinan in the New Jersey area. Also, one of the first weekends
after Notre Dame was given in Miami and the weekend may have made
it to Sioux City, Iowa before it was presented in Grand Forks, North
Dakota.
This started me (Jack) on a quest to gather as much written documentation
about our history and to compile into one document. I am not the
first person to compile the history of Worldwide Marriage Encounter
but of those that I have read I have found some conflicting or missing
data. It seems logical that such a document should be stored in
the WWME Electronic Resource Library. So, if you have interests
about the history of Worldwide Marriage Encounter follow this link

For the sake of accuracy, I ask your assistance. If you have any
written documentation of the growth of Worldwide Marriage Encounter
from it’s beginnings as Matrimonial Conjugal in Spain, through
the transition from National Marriage Encounter to Worldwide Marriage
Encounter, please email to
or send the information to the following address:
