God's Desire For Us
Fr. Bob McDonald
Marriage is God’s idea.
Marriage is not a modern invention. It is not a plan designed
to save money and avoid taxes. It is not an arrangement between
two men, or two women.
Marriage is God’s plan for giving us a share in the Divine
Life.
When God created the first man, the Bible tells us, He did not
leave the man alone. Nor did God give Adam another man as a companion.
The Creator designed a person like Adam, yet different. (The French
say: “Vive la difference!”)
God did not then create other humans like them. But He shared
with Adam and his wife the joy of creating new life, new human beings!
God gave them the mission of helping to bring new people into this
world. All people would be connected in one family As a couple,
they would see God’s image multiply. Each child born would
be a precious replica of God in His knowing and loving Spirit. Each
would be destined for a journey through this life into eternal life
with God.
But God did more!
God Himself became one of earth’s children, born of the Virgin
Mary, conceived by the power of God’s Spirit. The willingness
of Joseph to take Mary as his wife when she was already pregnant
is a sign of the importance of Marriage. As the Gospel relates,
Jesus was obedient to Mary and Joseph, learning from them like every
human child.
When Jesus began His mission to reconcile the world to His Father
in Heaven, he began at a Wedding. By His presence in every wedding,
Jesus raises up the marriage and makes it a SACRAMENT.
In Marriage, a husband and wife become ONE BODY. They become the
basic unit of church, the Body of Christ. They become the visible
presence of Jesus. His Love shines through their love. Jesus heals
through their love. He gives us hope in a hopeless world. He lets
us know how much He loves us, when we see a Sacramental Couple.
Jesus attracts others through their love. God’s plan is for
all people to belong to His one church, the ONE Body of Christ.
God desires a husband and wife to enjoy being GIVERS OF LIFE.
As your priest, I need to see you enjoying your marriage. When
you come to Mass, I need your joyfulness to inspire me to celebrate.
Because of you, I long to go on being your Priest. I want you
to believe in the plan God has for you in the New Evangelization.
On WORLD MARRIAGE DAY I will be praying for all of you, praying
that your passion grows, and that you feel the JOY which God desires
for you.
HAPPY WORLD MARRIAGE DAY!
I love you.
