Handbook for Prayer Couples

Jack & Karen Baker

If you have not been a prayer couple before, or just want a refresher of what is involved, we encourage you to visit the WWME Encounter Resource Library Community Pillar Resources at erl.wwme.org/cp/. Among many other excellent resources, you can download CP4006.doc - Handbook for Prayer Couples.

Being a Prayer Couple for a priest, religious, or couple making a Weekend is of great importance to the person or couple for whom you are being a Prayer Couple. From our experience the basics of being a Prayer Couple seems to be similar around the country. Different Local Areas may have nuances to this vital role but the main function is to offer prayer and possibly sacrifice of some form in support of the Weekend in general and specifically for whom you have been requested to be the Prayer Couple. The responsibilities include sending a prayer letter to be delivered on Sunday of the Weekend and to offer support after the Weekend. The support after the Weekend generally includes attending a greet-off on Sunday of the Weekend, encouraging attendance at the Weekend Reunion, including offering to attend and/or provide transportation to the Reunion. Additional support in the form of phone calls, an occasional note, an offer to get together for some social time to discuss the Weekend values, and an invitation to join your in local Community activities. You become their link to Community and a resource for supporting WWME values.

When being asked to be a Prayer Couple, it is understood that you are being asked to make some sacrifice of your time. Some Local Areas include a pot-luck dinner on Sunday of the Weekend. Other Local Areas have a wedding cake reception and still others invite couples off the Weekend into their homes for a pot-luck meal and gathering with other couples. This may seem like a lot to ask - unless you compare it to the multitude of hours others have expended preparing for and presenting the Weekend. Part of the WWME Mission Statement requires that we provide ongoing community support for the lifestyle professed on the Weekend. Being a Prayer Couple involves offering this support.

Please support your WWME family and your Local Area by offering to be a Prayer Couple.
